Diveboard Feature Updates : new Home, Gear

by Ksso on October 28, 2011

This week's update is pretty exciting, finally a home-page that's both simple and elegent at explaining Diveboard. We probably tried telling a bit too much thus the previous homepage which didn't convey a simple message... Diveboard is your online logbook !We realized it's important we focus even more on what you guys need... thus we've been doing our best adding new features to the logbook. This week we added the Gear support. In the bulk editor, you'll find a gear section where you can list the gear you own along with the maintenance data... and when you log a dive just mark which gear you've used, we're track down their usage for you (so you won't end up in a bad situation as I did not...

Another incredible video today by Rafa Herrero Massieu. Titled "December" and filmed near Tenerife on the Canary Islands,

December is the prelude of winter gales. There is an odd tranquility, waters still warm and clear,People seems to keep away from the shore, the Ocean recovers its peace. And Life claims its space: the pelagos

The video shows up amongst others an incredible group of whales dancing together. Those huge animals, covered in a previous post, are peaceful to humans.

Gear review: TUSA gloves DG-5600

by Ksso on October 22, 2011

I've been diving without gloves for years. At a number of occasions I did regret not wearing some though... I still remember that dive in Cyprus in Amphorae's Cave where the drift was so strong I was basically hanging at the reef like a gecko. In those circumstances even if you take extra careful steps in where lay your hands... it would still feel more secure to wear a pair of gloves - there were a couple times where I remember my hand being unexpectedly close to urchin's spikes. As an underwater photographer, though, I need as much dexterity as I can on my fingers (tiny buttons to push/turn to set aperture and shutter...) so I ended up thinking gloves are not an option. This just changed...

Bing loves fish today

by Ksso on October 21, 2011

I don't usually use Bing, and bumped there by accident, still pretty fun to find a pretty usual fish for us, scuba divers, on the front page: a Blennie ! This particular one is a "Parablennius gattorugine" which can be seen in the Mediterranean Sea and Atlantic Ocean.Fun fact about them, the female lay eggs in a safe place (usually a crack in the reef) during spring, and the male will keep them safe while hovering above the nest to ensure proper oxygenation of the water.

Video day: Discover Sorocco Islands

by Ksso on October 20, 2011

Darek Sepiolo has put together an incredible video of his trip in Socorro Islands he did onboard the Solmar V, a beautiful livaboard ship.

Socorro belongs to Revillagigedo archipelago. It's located in Pacific out of Baja California coast (Mexico). It's not very popular diving destination but it definitely deserves attention. Mainly because of very friendly oceanic mantas. Music John Newton Howard from "The Lady in the Water".

If you haven't dived in a while you will absolutely feel an urge to when you'll see the beautiful mantas, reef sharks and hammerheads  passing Darek peacefully in the blue.

Diveboard Feature updates: picture tags and titles, trip folders, SAC calculations...

by Ksso on October 18, 2011

A bunch of new updates as we speed forward the Beta release of Diveboard :

Picture tags and titles: On top of the drag-and-drop organization Interface letting you shuffle your pictures and select your featured picture, you now get a list interface letting you add on each pictures a title/comment and tag fishes from the fish database. When you tag a fish in a picture it will be automagically added to the list of species you spotted during the dive so if you're like me and take pictures of everything you see during a dive, that will probably be the place to start with for marking down the species you encountered. ...

Diveboard feature updates: Tanks, visibility and plugin

by Ksso on October 11, 2011

We start the week with a set of user request being delivered

Tank data :  You will now find in the "profile" section a "Tank & Gas" section letting you add details about what and how much you've been breathing during your dive. You can add the tank type, volume, start and end pressure and gas type (and even custom types for our tec diver friends). Naturally tanks will show up nicely formatted on the Profile section of your dive logbook.

Water visibility : Nothing really fancy but that basic info in now available on the main pane of the dive editor.

Plugin updates: Bugfixes on the Mares M2, better support for OSX Lion, Linux 64 bits (debian, tgz,  rpm package thanks to rubiojr !). If you...

Diveboard feature updates : Pictures, Buddies & Dive Shops

by Ksso on October 05, 2011

We have a long list of feature requests, so we started a spree to squash them and get you divers happy ! And the results a fairly cool (at least in our opinion here at Diveboard).

Pictures view and edit is now infinitely better. On the viewer side, you get a nice global view of your set in your page letting you quickly select the pics you want to show up. On the wizard side you can drag-and-drop the pics to rearrange them in the way you like.We also fixed an annoying Picasa bug which prevented some of our diveboarders to add their Picasa pics using the "share" link provided by Picasa. ...

Fish round-up : the Butterflyfish

by Ksso on September 28, 2011

I love Butterflyfish, they usually come in pairs and are kind enough to swim into the bule letting you take cool shots at them. Butterflyfish are part of the Chaetodontidae family which counts about 10 genera and 114 species. As described by the University of Michigan, members of this family vary considerably in terms of color, but all butterflyfishes share certain morphological traits such as a deep, laterally compressed body, ctenoid scales that extend onto the soft-rayed portions of the dorsal and anal fins, and jaws that may be slightly or extremely elongated. They can measure up to 30cm although the typical butterflyfish is more around 20cm and usually can be seen around 15-30m...

Fish round-up: Meet the boss : the Triggerfish

by Ksso on September 20, 2011

Triggerfishes are members of the Balistidae family which accounts for about 40 species. The Triggerfish is a fairly common species that can be found all over the oceans in tropical and sub-tropical waters (I recently saw a bunch in Thailand). The indo-pacific ocean offers the most diverse set of species.Divers know the triggerfishes well, especially if you've been diving during their nesting seasons since they get really aggressive. I heard numerous reports of divers being chased by them for a long time (and enven during deco stops which can be a hassle) -  in those circumstances do not hesitate to kick the triggerfish with your fins. The Triggerfish has a small but strong- jawed mouth...
