Scuba diving locations in Finland:
The Gulf Of Finland, and it's larger neighbour, the Gulf of Bothnia, are both host to numerous wrecks and historical finds, being branches of the Baltic Sea which has an average depth of only 55 metres and is one of the shallowest, most island-dotted seas in the world.
When to scuba dive in Finland:
May to September. The weather is fairly dry with surface water temperature rising to 18-20C in July. Days are long in summertime, meaning extended warm periods. Deep down, the effect of the long, cold winters makes itself known as a year-round bottom temperature of 4C, and so for long deep dives a drysuit is recommended. The salinity of the water is low, tides are not noticeable and strong currents dont exist. During the summer the visibility varies from around 4 to 15 meters.
Local standards for gear:
For scuba diving, both DIN (200 and 300 bar) and Yoke (200 bar) connectors are used.
The best scuba diving spots in Finland:
- The St Michael, a Russian merchant ship, about 25 m long. A very well preserved wreck, with all masts still standing up. It has been partially excavated.
- The Vrouw Maria, a Dutch merchant ship located in 1999 at a depth of 41 to 43 metres.
- The Kronprins Gustav Adolf, a ship of the Swedish line, was wrecked off Helsinki in 1788. It lies a few nautical miles southwest from the lighthouse island of Harmaja at a depth of 18 to 20 metres.
